Bodywork and Reiki Treatments: How do they work? A brief case study - the importance of prevention and holistic maintenance, before an imbalance becomes an illness or an injury.

Equine Symbiosis is a project not only about educating humans. It's also about bringing relief and holistic care for horses, supplementary to the veterinary and osteopathic care. Holistic meaning ensuring their well-being on a physical, mental and emotional level, beyond the environmental and social. Often, skin or behavioral problems, physical or mental rigidity, nervousness, as well as laminitis, are caused by excessive stress, which, if not managed properly, leads to the building of physical tensions and conditions.

Bodywork and Reiki treatments aim to release such tensions and excessive stress, preventing them from becoming an illness or an injury. That is why it is a respected supplementary to veterinary care maintenance therapeutic approach, just like a proper nutrition or exercise plan adjusted to the individual needs and capabilities of each horse.

Through Bodywork and Reiki treatments, we introduce proper attention, massage techniques, and attitude which ensure your horse’s natural healing, deeper relaxation, and improved work standard daily.

Here's a case study:

These two hippotherapy heroes from our local non-profit in Tervuren, Belgium, received a little bodywork enriched with Reiki treatment during their week off. The tensions were present mostly in their necks (splenius area) and partly on the back. They really enjoyed glutes massage too ☺️ even asked for it persistently. Additionally, a gentle, warm Reiki touch worked immediately on the senior horse. On the younger one, a longer session was necessary as the tensions were more dense. However, after a while, the relaxation became obvious, and the tensions reduced, leading to more patient and harmonious move and becoming overall calmer.

It was beautiful to see them becoming more relaxed and less sore, with the first effects visible only after 10min.

In addition, we added an excellent and simple muscle flexibility exercise with long and steady brushing moves, helpful and easy to do in everyday maintenance.

If we combine such equine bodywork with mental and emotional coaching, we can be sure of a smooth, better, more trustworthy collaboration between the human and the horse, no matter the discipline. Read more about stress management, mental and emotional coaching here.

In this case, Bodywork and Reiki is a lovely way not only to release tensions and maintain horses' holistic well-being while on a break from hippotherapy work, but also a way to give back for all that they do for children and us 🩷

What we observed in this case is less soreness, instant relief especially in the neck area, and slight improvement in vividness. A precious warming up and loosening addition to a decreasing flexibility in soft tissues that comes with age and lower temperatures.
